Heritage & Craft

Every Caracoda Equestrian piece begins as a salvage mission, rescuing high-quality, antique saddle leather from a fate of decay. We hand-select pieces based on their patina and structural integrity, using traditional leatherworking tools to preserve the character of the grain. Each seam is hand-stitched using a saddle-stitch technique—a slow, deliberate process that ensures the thread will never unravel, unlike modern machine-sewn alternatives. This is not fast fashion; it is a commitment to longevity and the preservation of equestrian heritage.

Care & Maintenance

Antique saddle leather is a living material that deepens in character with mindful stewardship. To preserve the structural integrity and rich patina of your piece, we advise keeping it away from extreme direct heat and giving it a regular, gentle sweep with a soft, natural-bristle brush. Because this historic leather responds best to traditional methods, we have compiled comprehensive instructions for its cleaning, conditioning, and long-term preservation. Please read our full recommendations on our dedicated Leather Care page.

Shipping & Returns

We prepare every shipment from our workshop with the same care we put into the bags themselves. For details regarding our lead times, international transit, and our policy on returns and exchanges, please read our full Shipping Policy and Returns & Exchanges pages. If you have questions regarding a bespoke commission or require specific delivery accommodations, please contact the bench directly via our Enquiries page.

Collection: The Heptarchy: (The House of Wessex)
The Spirit: The Stoic Shield / The Ancient Pouch

The Ancestry of the Scrip: To understand the Uffington is to understand its ancestor: the ancient scrip. Derived from the Latin scrippum, the scrip was the survival kit of the ancient world—a remarkably sturdy pouch slung over the shoulder of the pilgrim, the shepherd, and the West-Saxon scout. It was a vessel of necessity, holding the flint, steel, and silver required for the long road. By shaping the Uffington into a layered, vertical horseshoe, we have reclaimed this word from the ledgers and returned it to the rider's hip. It is not merely an accessory; it is a piece of high-status equipment for the journey of life, carrying the architectural weight of a Great Earldom.

The Giant in the Chalk
Looking not at the map, but at the earth itself, high upon the wind-swept Berkshires, a great white dragon-horse is carved into the hillside. Its body is made of the very chalk that forms the bones of England. The Uffington is named after this prehistoric guardian because it shares its most vital trait: Endurance. We chose the horseshoe shape for this model because it is the ultimate symbol of protection—the shield that allows the horse to run a thousand miles without breaking.

The Salvage & The Tactile Experience
The Uffington is a masterclass in structural endurance, built piece by piece from the most resilient sections of a vintage English saddle. The creation of this bag requires exhaustive physical labour before the first stitch is ever cast. We painstakingly disassemble the forgotten tack, stabilising the parched, antique fibres with our specialised, natural balms to preserve the character of the grain. The result is a piece of wearable history that carries the deep, comforting scent of authentic equestrian leather and a rich, glass-like patina that no modern factory could ever replicate.

The Architecture & The Modern Companion
This piece translates ancient utility into a refined daily companion. We construct the vertical horseshoe silhouette—echoing the traditional sporran-like profile—using a fully hand-stitched doublet construction. This features a dedicated, scaled-down front pocket that mirrors the main body, providing structured, layered organisation for the modern navigator. It offers a commanding, compact footprint that sits sleekly and securely against the hip without feeling cumbersome. Anchored by a heavy central harness strap and the warm glow of a solid brass Sam Browne stud, the Uffington acts as a physical fortress for your modern provisions. Every seam is permanently locked in place by the traditional, hand-driven saddle stitch and our signature "Natural Hay" braided thread, ensuring this legacy piece will never fail you on the road.
